Truecaller, with over 500 million users globally, is entering a tougher phase as its rapid growth begins to slow and competition intensifies across telecom networks and smartphone ecosystems.

Heavy Dependence on India

India has been the backbone of Truecaller’s expansion, contributing more than 350 million users—around 70% of its total base. The widespread issue of spam calls in the country has made Truecaller an essential communication tool rather than just a caller ID app.

Rising Competition from Telecom and Tech Giants

The competitive landscape is shifting quickly. Telecom operators in India are rolling out features like Calling Name Presentation (CNAP), verified business number series, and AI-based spam filters. At the same time, Apple and Google are integrating caller ID and spam protection directly into their operating systems, reducing reliance on third-party apps.

Slowing Download Growth

Truecaller’s momentum is weakening. Downloads in India dropped 16% year-over-year in 2025, while global downloads declined 5%. After peaking at 175 million downloads in 2021, annual installs have stabilized at around 120 million, signaling a plateau.

Geographic Shift in User Growth

Although India remains the largest market, its share of downloads has fallen from over 70% to the mid-50% range. This suggests that new user growth is gradually shifting toward other regions.

Investor Concerns and Stock Decline

Investors are closely watching these changes. Truecaller’s stock has dropped about 78% since its 2021 IPO and is down roughly 37% this year, reflecting concerns about its long-term growth and sustainability.

CNAP vs Truecaller’s Core Offering

While CNAP provides caller identification through telecom networks using KYC data, Truecaller argues that its platform offers a more advanced and dynamic system. It includes spam detection, fraud prevention, and contextual insights, going beyond basic caller ID functionality.

Advertising Revenue Pressure

The biggest immediate risk comes from advertising, which contributes 65–70% of Truecaller’s revenue. In 2025, the company lost about one-third of its ad traffic from a major partner, reportedly Google, due to an algorithm issue. Truecaller is now working to diversify by adding new partners and building its own ad exchange.

Growth in In-App Revenue

Despite challenges in downloads and ads, in-app purchases are rising sharply. Revenue has grown from $600,000 in 2017 to $39.3 million in 2025, with monthly in-app revenue now exceeding $2 million.

Expansion on iOS Platform

Truecaller is gaining traction on iPhones, with iOS downloads increasing from under 5% to around 11–12% of total downloads. The company has introduced real-time caller ID and improved feature parity with Android, though Apple’s native call-screening features remain a threat.

Enterprise and Subscription Growth

Truecaller is expanding its enterprise services through Truecaller for Business, enabling verified communication between companies and customers. This segment grew 39% in 2025. Additionally, the platform now has over 4 million paid subscribers using premium features like advanced spam blocking and ad-free experiences.

Privacy Concerns and Scrutiny

The company has faced criticism over its data collection practices and user consent, particularly in India. While Truecaller denies any wrongdoing and claims regulatory compliance, privacy concerns remain an ongoing issue.

Future Outlook

Truecaller is betting on innovation to sustain growth, focusing on AI-powered spam detection and expanding its revenue streams across ads, subscriptions, and enterprise services. However, its future success will depend on how well it adapts as caller identification shifts from standalone apps to telecom networks and built-in smartphone features.
